The 2019 Mazda CX-5 Earns IIHS Advanced Rating

The Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems Earned the Award After Thorough Testing

The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is a roomy, capable crossover that’s as practical as it is fun, but the accolades don’t end there. Its also an incredible safe vehicle, thanks to several advanced driver aids and safety features. One of those, the automatic emergency braking feature, helped the Mazda CX-5 earn the second highest rating for pedestrian crash prevention.

Of all vehicles tested, the CX-5 was one of only five to have earned the advanced rating. This is no small feat considering the IIHS has upped the standards required to earn such an award. The stiffer criteria also took the Smart City Brake Support and 360-degree view monitor into consideration when evaluating the CX-5, and both features added value to the institute’s opinion of the CX-5.

Smart City Brake Support scans the road ahead for hazards, and if a pedestrian steps in front of your moving SUV, will warn you of the potential impact. Should you fail to react, the system can apply the brakes automatically in an attempt to reduce or prevent any impact from occurring.

The 360-degree view monitor utilizes the series of cameras that are strategically placed on the CX-5 to give you a full view of your surroundings. Perfect for helping back out of tight parking spaces, pull out of blind intersections such as parking garages, and navigating through tight alleyways, this camera system was instrumental in achieving such high marks for pedestrian safety by eliminating blind spots and warning of potential impacts both forward and behind.

In testing, the CX-5 demonstrated a clear ability to mitigate pedestrian impacts time and time again. Three different scenarios were placed in front of the crossover, and despite being run at different speeds, the CX-5 showed significant reductions in speed in every test scenario, in some cases never even making an impact with test dummies.

In earning the second highest IIHS pedestrian safety rating, the Mazda CX-5 has demonstrated Mazda’s commitment to safety both inside and outside of their vehicles. This test was a confirmation that the technology used to help mitigate impacts can help reduce injury and save lives.
